The Credit Card Minimum Due Trap: What ₹50,000 Really Costs

Credit Score · 2 min read · By KitnaEMI Editorial

Short answer: If you owe ₹50,000 on a card charging 42% a year and pay only a minimum due of 5% of the balance (floor ₹200), it takes about 17 years to clear and costs about ₹1.10 lakh in interest. Converting the balance to a 12-month EMI at 15% costs about ₹4,100 in interest.

How the minimum due works

Most issuers set the minimum due at a small percentage of your balance, often around 5% plus charges, with a small floor. Paying it keeps your account in good standing, but the rest of the balance keeps charging interest, usually at 36% to 48% a year, and your next minimum due is a share of what is left.

The simulation

Assumptions: ₹50,000 balance, 42% a year interest charged monthly, minimum due of 5% of the outstanding balance with a ₹200 floor, no new spending.

  • Time to clear: about 203 months, which is almost 17 years.
  • Interest paid: about ₹1.10 lakh, more than twice the original ₹50,000.

Real cards differ, since many add late fees, GST and other charges, so treat this as an illustration of the pattern, not your exact bill.

Compare the alternatives

Option for ₹50,000EMITotal interest
12-month card EMI at 15%₹4,513about ₹4,100
12-month personal loan at 12%₹4,442about ₹3,300
Pay the minimum due only (42%)falls with balanceabout ₹1.10 lakh over 17 years
12-month repayment at 42%₹5,174about ₹12,100

The gap between revolving at 42% and a 12-month EMI is huge. If you cannot pay the bill in full, convert the balance to an EMI or a cheaper loan, then stop using the card until it is cleared.

What it does to your credit score

A balance close to your limit raises your credit utilisation, which can lower your score. Missing the minimum due is worse, because late payments are reported. See how credit score affects loan rates.

What to do

  1. Pay the full statement balance each month when you can. That avoids interest on new purchases.
  2. If you carry a balance, move it to a lower-rate EMI or personal loan. Check the processing fee first.
  3. Compare options with the personal loan EMI calculator and read credit card EMI vs personal loan.

FAQ

Is paying the minimum due bad?

It avoids a late fee and a bad mark on your report, but it leaves most of the balance charging high interest. Use it only as a last resort.

How much interest do credit cards charge in India?

Many cards charge about 3% to 4% a month, or 36% to 48% a year, on revolving balances. Check your card's terms.

Can I convert my outstanding balance to an EMI?

Most issuers allow it, usually with a processing fee. The interest is typically lower than the revolving rate.
