Car Loan Down Payment: How Much Should You Pay Upfront?
Why the down payment matters
Every rupee you pay upfront is a rupee you do not borrow, so you do not pay interest on it. A car loses value faster than a house, so a bigger down payment also protects you from owing more than the car is worth.
The numbers: ₹12 lakh car at 9.5% for 5 years
| Down payment | Loan amount | EMI | Total interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% (₹1.2 lakh) | ₹10.8 lakh | ₹22,682 | ₹2.81 lakh |
| 20% (₹2.4 lakh) | ₹9.6 lakh | ₹20,162 | ₹2.50 lakh |
| 30% (₹3.6 lakh) | ₹8.4 lakh | ₹17,642 | ₹2.18 lakh |
Going from 10% to 30% down lowers the EMI by ₹5,040 a month and saves about ₹63,000 in interest over the loan.
A practical rule
Put down at least 20% of the on-road price, and keep the loan to 5 years or less. The on-road price includes registration, insurance and other charges, so ask the dealer for the full figure before you compute the percentage.
Do not drain your emergency fund for a bigger down payment. If paying 30% would leave you with no cushion, a 20% down payment and a shorter tenure is safer.
Watch for these
- Zero down payment offers. These finance the whole price, and sometimes the insurance and accessories as well, so you pay interest on them.
- Processing fees. Often 0.5% to 1% of the loan, plus GST. A smaller loan means a smaller fee.
- Dealer finance versus a bank loan. Get a bank sanction letter first and compare the reducing-balance rate.

FAQ
What is the minimum down payment for a car loan in India?
Many lenders finance up to 85% to 90% of the on-road price for strong borrowers, which means a 10% to 15% down payment. Terms vary by lender and borrower profile.
Is a bigger down payment always better?
It lowers the EMI and interest, but keep an emergency fund. Do not empty your savings to avoid a loan.
Does the down payment change my interest rate?
Sometimes. A lower loan-to-value ratio can get you a slightly better rate at some lenders. Ask for quotes at different down payments.
