How Your Credit Score Affects Your Loan Interest Rate and EMI
What a credit score is
A credit score is a three-digit number, usually between 300 and 900, that summarises your repayment history. Credit bureaus such as CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark calculate it from your loans and credit cards. The score is a snapshot of how safely a lender can expect you to repay.
Score bands and what lenders usually think
| Score | Lender view |
|---|---|
| 750 and above | Good. Best rates and quick approval are likely |
| 700 to 749 | Fair. Approval is likely, rates may be higher |
| 650 to 699 | Weak. Approval is harder and rates are higher |
| Below 650 | Poor. Many lenders decline or charge a high premium |
These bands are a rule of thumb. Each lender sets its own cut-offs and also looks at income, employer, existing EMIs and the loan type.
What a higher score is worth in rupees
Lenders often add a premium to the rate for lower scores. A gap of 1% is common. On a ₹50 lakh, 20-year home loan:
- At 8.5% the EMI is ₹43,391 and total interest is ₹54.1 lakh.
- At 9.5% the EMI is ₹46,607 and total interest is ₹61.9 lakh.
The extra cost is ₹3,216 a month, or about ₹7.7 lakh over the loan. On unsecured loans the gap is wider. A personal loan of ₹10 lakh over 3 years costs ₹1.79 lakh in interest at 11% and ₹3.01 lakh at 18%, a difference of ₹1.23 lakh.
How to raise your score before you apply
- Pay every EMI and card bill on time. Payment history is the biggest factor. Even one missed payment shows up.
- Keep credit card use low. Using less than about 30% of your limit helps.
- Don't apply for many loans at once. Each formal application is a hard enquiry. Compare rates using soft checks first.
- Keep old accounts open. A longer credit history helps.
- Mix credit types sensibly. A mix of secured and unsecured credit, managed well, helps over time.
- Fix errors. Get your credit report, check for wrong accounts or wrong late payments, and raise a dispute with the bureau.
Credit bureaus must give you at least one free full credit report every year. Check yours at least a month before you apply.
How long it takes
Fixing errors can lift a score within weeks. Building a score through on-time payments takes months. Plan to improve it three to six months ahead of a big loan.

What if your score is low?
- Ask a family member with a strong score to be a co-applicant.
- Choose a secured loan, such as a loan against fixed deposits or gold, which depends less on your score.
- Make a larger down payment so the lender's risk is lower.
- Wait and rebuild. A few months of clean payments helps.
FAQ
What is a good credit score for a home loan?
750 or above gets the best rates at most lenders. Scores of 700 to 749 are often approved at a slightly higher rate.
Does checking my own score hurt it?
No. Checking your own report is a soft enquiry and does not lower the score.
Do lenders really change rates by score?
Many do. Risk-based pricing is common, especially for personal loans and credit cards, and sometimes for home loans.
How quickly can I improve my score?
Correcting errors can help within weeks. A real improvement from better behaviour usually takes three to six months or more.
