Credit Card EMI vs Personal Loan: Which Costs Less?

Personal Loans · 3 min read · By KitnaEMI Editorial

Short answer: For small purchases over a few months, credit card EMI conversion is often simpler and cheaper in total. For larger amounts over a year or more, a personal loan at a lower rate usually costs less. Compare the total you repay, including processing fees.

Two ways to pay in instalments

A credit card EMI converts a purchase or your outstanding balance into fixed monthly payments, usually over 3 to 24 months. A personal loan gives you cash, repaid over 1 to 7 years. Both use the same EMI formula, but the rates and fees differ.

Worked example: ₹50,000 over 6 months

A card at 15% a year turns ₹50,000 into 6 EMIs of ₹8,702. You pay ₹52,210 in total, which is ₹2,210 of interest. Add a processing fee, which many cards charge as a flat amount or a percentage, plus GST.

A personal loan would likely have a higher rate for such a small amount and a processing fee of its own, and the minimum tenure is often 12 months.

For short, small amounts, the card is usually the better tool.

Worked example: ₹1 lakh over 12 months

At 16% on a card, the EMI is ₹9,073 and total interest is ₹8,877. At 14%, the EMI is ₹8,979 and interest is ₹7,745. A personal loan at 12% would cost about ₹6,619 in interest. The gap grows with the amount and the tenure.

What to compare

  1. Total repayment, not just the monthly EMI.
  2. Processing fee: both card EMI conversions and personal loans can charge one. Add GST.
  3. Foreclosure charge: closing a card EMI or a personal loan early often costs 2 to 5% of the outstanding amount.
  4. Credit limit: a card EMI blocks part of your credit limit until you repay, which can raise your credit utilisation.
  5. No-cost EMI offers: "no-cost" often means the interest is built into the product price or the merchant discount is removed. Compare with the cash price.

When a credit card EMI is the better choice

  • The amount is small and the tenure short.
  • The merchant offers a genuine subsidised or no-cost EMI.
  • You want to avoid a new loan enquiry on your credit report.

When a personal loan is the better choice

  • The amount is large and the tenure long.
  • The loan rate is clearly below your card EMI rate.
  • You need cash, not a purchase on the card.

Never do this

Don't pay only the minimum due on a card balance. Revolving credit card interest is among the most expensive borrowing available, usually 36% to 48% a year. If you carry a balance, converting it to an EMI or a personal loan at a lower rate is usually cheaper. Compare the options first with the personal loan EMI calculator.

FAQ

Is credit card EMI cheaper than a personal loan?

For small amounts and short tenures, often yes. For large amounts and long tenures, a personal loan is usually cheaper.

Does credit card EMI affect my credit score?

It uses part of your credit limit. High utilisation can lower your score, but timely payments help.

What is a no-cost EMI?

An EMI offer where you appear to pay no interest. The cost is often hidden in the price or in a lost discount, so compare with the cash price.

Can I prepay a credit card EMI?

Yes, but most issuers charge a foreclosure fee. Check your card terms.
